A great way to get Inexpensive Groceries

May 31st, 2008 | By Kendra

I paid $30, and got all of this!

1.5 lb. Bacon Wrapped Beef Filet (4 x 6 oz.)

2.5 lb. Breaded Chicken Breast Filets

1.5 lb. Bone-In Pork Steaks (4 x 6 oz.)

28 oz. Salisbury Steak Dinner Entrée

2.5 lb. Beef and Bean Burritos (10 x 4 oz.)

2 lb. Popcorn Chicken

9.5 oz. Stouffer’s Flat Bread Pizza

16 oz. Frozen Peas

16 oz. Corn Niblets

16 oz. Green Beans

2 lb. Fresh Onions

29 oz. Pears

32 oz. Borden 2% Reduced Fat Shelf-Stable Milk

9 oz. Breakfast Cereal

8 oz. Corn Muffin Mix

16 oz. Bean Soup Mix

1 Dozen Eggs

1 Dessert Item

This was the first time that I had ordered from Angel Food. I’ve been thinking about it for a while, and finally I got around to doing it. I arrived at the church that distributes the food at 10 am. There was already a small line forming. Church members were scrambling to unload boxes from pallets sitting in the parking lot. I guess the truck had arrived late. One lady came out apologizing to everyone for the wait. She explained that they had received over 2500 orders this month, more than double any other month they’ve had!

As I looked around I was surprised to see people of all different types. Suburban looking soccer mom’s, impoverished looking people, elderly men and women, middle and lower class, all of different races. I guess I had the impression that I would be out of place; wrong of me, I know.

We waited in line, in the rising heat, while the workers scurried around trying to get the food inside before it began to melt. After about 40 min. we were let inside. I guess the long wait wasn’t typical. It only took me about 6 min. to go through the assembly type line as people filled my box with food. A quiet young man carried the box to my van for me.

I was very pleased with everything that I got for such little money! I’ve already placed my order for next month. You can still get your order for June in as long as they receive it by June 9th.

I have taken advantage of this myself about a year ago. I’m interested to see your review of it once you’ve had a chance to use some of the products.

BTW…did you know that http://www.hillbillyhousewife.com posts a menu each month based on the Angel Food Boxes? Thought you might like to take a look if you didn’t already know about it :-)

I’ve been doing this for years now and it really helps out, especially now that we have our two grands for the summer. Try the chicken box next time too if you can. Great deal!!! We got three reg. and three chicken boxes and my 15 cu. ft. freezer is just about full!

    Julie-

Thank you so much for telling me about the Angel Food Menu plans. I will be sure to check that out. What a great tip! I did not know that she did that. If I like what she has I’ll link to it next time I do a review of the products. Thanks again!

I’d also like to see your thoughts on the food once you’ve had a chance to use some of it. We got a box in April..and were really disappointed in the quality of the meat.

I had been wondering about this. They gave out flyers at our church for it. I wasn’t sure if I would like what I got, but it looks like you got some great stuff for just $30! I may try it next month.

We have done this a couple of times also and we were not happy with the meat either. The chicken breast were fine but the other meat was just off. I am interested in hearing your review once you try it also, it has been a couple of years since we tried it and it might be better now. I know that with the economy we could really use it if the quality is better. Another good thing about the program is that some money goes back to the church also for every box that is sold.

I have done this too. EVerything was good except for the quality of the meat. It was pretty bad.

Ive ordered angelfood for years now, on and off. I always check to see what the menu is even if Im not ordering for that month. It is a very good organization, it does seem to me that we used to get more for the money a few years ago, but I guess thats just the cost of living getting higher for them too. Ive never liked their pork chops or steak, everything else is good. I wish they would do away with those, and put in more chicken, or other items. I look at hillbilly housewife for good menus also.

Funny enough, I have only tried the food from AFM once … simply because I forgot to order last month … and the steaks were FANTASTIC!!! The ribeyes melted in our mouths!!! Maybe it’s because my hubby is an awesome cook … or maybe the quality of the beef has gotten better. We definitely aren’t in need of assistance due to the fact that my hubby makes incredibly good money, but since this organization doesn’t have income limits, I take advantage of it to reduce the costs involved with purchasing food. Next, I will be attempting to start a garden! I’m a very frugal person (sometimes just cheap) and like to use the money my hubby makes for other things … not just the necessities! I love programs like AFM and will continue to purchase food thru them as long as they are active! :o ) I highly recommend this organization.

I ordered for the 1st time this month. The extra boxes of meat are a steal. I paid $90 & got the regular box of groceries, plus 2 more boxes chuck full of chicken & over a dozen steaks! My husband hasn’t seen steak in ages ;)

I wish we had this program in our area. But we are lucky enough in Wisconsin to have a similar program called Share WI. We get our box of food each month from them and love it. The typical box is about $18 and you can order extras. It looks like the Angel network has more name brand stuff then what Share has. http://www.sharewi.org

It’s an good deal financially, but I have had a lot of stuff I wasn’t very satisfied with to be honest. I know they are trying to get food to people and I fully support that. However, we cannot stand most convenience food. I end up giving a lot of stuff away. I DO love getting the milk, eggs, frozen or canned veggies. I could do without the tv dinners and deserts. Throw in more “real food.” I’ve had decent meat and horrible meat. This months filets were decent and we really enjoyed them as a treat! So, good with the bad, is the moral here!

  14. We missed the deadline for the May delivery. But my husband and I were pleased with the March and April food boxes; so I’m putting in an order for June.
My city doesn’t yet have a delivery site but there is one in my parents’ city. This spring, my mother and I both put in orders in her city; and my box would get to my house as part of the normal family back and forth travels.
Other families in my area have been carpooling to pick up their orders.
