Keeping Potatoes Fresh Longer
July 11th, 2008 | By Kendra
Here’s a little tip I heard somewhere: To keep your potatoes fresh longer, just put an apple in the bag with them!
**Update:Well, that was a mean trick! Somebody lied to me! I guess you are NOT supposed to put apples with potatoes. They make potatoes go back quicker. Sorry guys! Well, at least now we know what NOT to do

Thanks for the great tip. It must keep them from sprouting. Awesome. Very cute blog with lots of great ideas!

OMG honey…it’s just the opposite!!! It will make your potatoes go bad much sooner and cause them to sprout!!!! Apples give off Ethylene gas which promotes ripening and then spoilage. You might wish to make a correction here to your blog.

Keep your onions away from your potatoes, too. They make them go bad faster (actually, I think they both go bad faster if they are together).

I keep my potatoes (or any root veg) in the fridge as I find they keep a whole lot longer. same with apples, etc. PS if the apples get wrinkled, use to make apple pie, apple butter, apple sauce, etc. the only fruit/veg i dont’ keep in the fridge is bananas. if they get spotty i use them for smoothies, banana bread, etc. good luck!
