How To Buy Your Family’s Clothing For $5 or less
July 18th, 2008 | By KendraI’ve been writing lately about minimizing our closets, but just because we don’t need a lot of clothing doesn’t mean we’ll never have to shop for it, and boy do I love shopping for clothes! I especially love a great deal! A while back I decided to limit myself to spending $5 or less per clothing item. That may sound hard to do, or like it would require sacrificing quality or style, but if you know where to look you can find top quality, name brand stuff for Goodwill prices! Here are my favorite places to shop, where finding clothing for under $5 is super easy!:
Kohl’s Clearance Rack- Now, I do not like credit cards, but I have to say that the only one I do have is a Kohl’s card, and I love having it! With a Kohl’s card you get special discounts and offers only good for cardholders. They always have great clearances going on, like 60-80% off, and when I use my card I often have another 15-30% off coupon that I am able to use with my Kohl’s card, not to mention the occasional free shipping code. The key is to pay the card off right away! I love shopping online when I have a free shipping code, talk about convenience, not to mention saving gas money!
Right now Kohl’s is having a great sale going on, and I have PROMO CODES to share!! Here is an example of a deal I found:

This shirt, regularly $16.00. After promo codes and free shipping my total would be only $4.36!
There are lots of other things to chose from, so go now before they are all gone!
Here are the codes for card holders:
15% off- JULYSAVE15 [Exp. 7/22]
Free Shipping- MVC7915 [Exp. 7/21]
Limited Too- Sometimes they have awesome clearance sales, stack those with coupons (and if you’re lucky a free shipping code), and you can really score some great deals! Right now they are having an extra 40% off clearance prices, plus you can use COUPON CODE: 755 [Exp. 07/21] for an extra 25% off. They are also offering $80 in TOO BUCKS (to spend on a future purchase) for every $50 you spend. I don’t see any deals that catch my eye right now, but often they have some good ones, for CUTE stuff too!
I have been fortunate in finding many adorable tops and bottoms on clearance for less than $5 shipped when using codes on clearance deals, so check back often!
The Children’s Place- I love shopping this store online when the clearance deals are good! They usually have a coupon code out, and shipping is a flat rate of $5. So, if you find a lot of stuff on sale, $5 bucks for shipping is worth it compared to the savings in time and gas!
Right now they are having a Monster Sale through the Outlet store online. For example:

This shirt is only $1.99 on sale! Add an extra 15% off to make the deal even sweeter!
Use code: FA78 for 15% off.
Find a lot of stuff on sale and the $5 shipping is so worth it!
So, do you get my point? Are you catching on? This isn’t so hard, is it?! Shopping is fun, and I especially love doing it from the comforts of home! Some other places to find great deals on clothing are:
TJ Maxx
Ross
Rugged Warehouse
Consignment Stores
Yard Sales
Goodwill
ebay (though make sure to consider the shipping charges!)
Notice I didn’t mention Walmart or K-mart. I don’t usually shop for clothing there. Sometimes you can find a good clearance deal, but what I have found is that the prices are still pretty high, the quality isn’t that good, and the style isn’t that great. Nothing against these stores, I just don’t like their clothing.
So, does anybody have any better coupon codes that they can share with us? Do you have a favorite place to shop for inexpensive clothing?? I’d love to hear how you save money on your family’s clothes!

Thanks for the pointers. I’m finding that I can find better prices at Kohl’s or JCPenny’s compared to the local thrift or consignment stores.
July 19th, 2008 at 7:20 amOh, I was at Ross the other day and picked up a few pairs of Joe boxers for my 5 year old for 1.34 each. They are normally around 5.99-6.99 each.

You failed to mention two of my FAVORITE places to shop for children’s clothes — Target and Old Navy. I have found that I can usually keep shirts to under $3 (a lot of times $2) there and pants to under $5. They have great clearances sales, but for those you usually need to hit the actual stores!

Right now select Old Navy stores across the country are offering and additional 50% off of their already clearance priced merchandise. I just got my daughter’s winter coat for $3!

Great job! I love Kohl’s for their 80% off racks. I stocked my DD up for the summer on shirts at $2-$3 apiece.
July 19th, 2008 at 10:43 amI also frequent Target’s 75% off rack, and have found myself adorable maternity clothes for $7 and less!

I guess we come from a poor section of town, where people pretty much only shop at Walmart, because it’s what we can afford. I found great deals there, a lot. I’ve gotten many pieces of clothing for my girls, for under $5 a piece. In fact, a lot of times, I can get a whole outfit for $5. Their clothes are not poor quality. At least not for us, anyway. My girls spend a lot of time crawling around on the floor, playing outside & climbing everything they can & the clothes have stood up to their adventures. I’ve seen many kids, in my daughter’s school, wearing the same clothes & shoes. But then, it’s Elementary school, so I guess they don’t have a concept of “style”.

I guess that’s my point…
July 19th, 2008 at 12:07 pmjust because we don’t have much money to spend on clothing, doesn’t mean we have to feel like we can’t shop anywhere with name brand stuff! And the good thing about name brand clothing is that it holds it’s resell value a lot better than generic brands, so you can make more money off of it when it comes time to sell it. You know what I mean? Nothin’ wrong with shopping at Walmart though!

I LOVE Old Navy!!! I was able to get my husband some shirts for .49!!! I stocked up and he still has alot of shirts with tags on them!!! The best thing is when people compliment him on his shirts and he tells them that they were .49…they never believe him??:)…I was also able to get some shirts for me for .49-1.99…all in all I spent $50 and saved $1200!!! I just LOVE Old Navy:)

You can also stop by Children’s Place and if they don’t have the size you need simply ask for cashier for a “free shipping card.” She will give you a CP business card with a free shipping code good for 1 use. It’s the best way to me b/c I can then go home and order after the kids go to bed plus they have free returns to the store.

Also, I pick up great deals at Gymboree when they have their semi-annual 60% off sale. A few weeks ago I picked up long-sleeved t-shirts and dress shirts, some short-sleeved t-shirts, pants, shorts, and a bathing suit for $3.99-$6.99 each. They will definitely last through both boys and then I can sell them on ebay and recoup my costs as Gymboree holds its value.

July 19th, 2008 at 11:20 pmGreat tip about the Children’s Place shipping card! That is so good to know!

Macy’s is a good place to also find clothing for $5 and under. Their clearance section usually has an additional discount. I bought my son an adidas shirt there for $2.40. They also offer additional discounts to cardholders, but the same discount can be used by all with a coupon from their sales ad.

I do the same kind of bargain shopping you do at Kohl’s, only mine is at JC Penney. I have a card with them and I can count on some really good deals. Around Mother’s and Father’s Day they send me $10 off of any $10 purchase and for my birthday this year (June, so around the same time as the other coupons) they sent me a coupon for $15 off any purchase as long as I used my Penney’s card. I was able to get new shirts for $3.49 each! That’s cheaper than used shirts at Goodwill! I love the deals at JC Penney!

I’m surprised that no one has mentioned two of my favorite places (in addition to the ones listed above.) Firstly Consignment Sales! Around our community these sales go on in the spring and fall. People sell their gently used items for pennies on the dollar. Secondly the Goodwill Store!! I especially have great luck for myself at this store. I recently bought four tops, three skirts, and a denim jacket for less than $40, all top quality, and near-perfect condition.

Hello!
I’m not sure if you have Savers in your area. You can check online at http://www.savers.com for the closest location to you. I buy pretty much all of the clothes for our family there. School uniforms, casual clothes, jeans for my husband, etc. It is a second hand store with great prices. You will want to do a quick check to be sure there are no stains or areas starting to come unsewed, but for the most part all of the clothes are in great condition!
