Half-Price MILK At CVS
August 28th, 2008 | By Kendra
A while back, I reported visiting a CVS in town and finding that they had milk for 1/2 off. They had a note taped to the door of the refrigerator that said “Milk expiring within 3 days is half off”. Of course I dug through the fridge to find every gallon of milk that was expiring, and ended up freezing like 4 gallons!
A couple of days ago, I was in another CVS, and just out of curiosity I looked to see if they had any milk expiring in 3 days. They did… they had one gallon, just for me! But they didn’t have any kind of sign advertising the “deal”. So, I went up front and asked to speak to a manager. They called him up, and I told him about the other CVS’s deal, and asked him if they do the same thing. He told me, “We do, but we aren’t supposed to be advertising it.” I said, “Great!” and went to fetch my gallon. It cost me $1.99 (plus $.04 tax).
I thought I’d let you guys know about this, so that you could see if your local CVS is doing the same thing. I don’t know if it’s regional, or what, but it’s worth asking about! I’m going to keep my eye out from now on for expiring milk at CVS, and hopefully I won’t have to keep paying almost $4/gal. any more!
And if you find a lot for a good deal, remember you can always freeze it (remember to pour a little out first to make room for expansion); and you can also add a pinch of salt to make it last about a week longer. Happy hunting!! For more money saving ideas, visit Crystal for Frugal Friday.
I’d be interested to hear from those of you who have found that you can or cannot get this deal at your CVS.

I wrote a post on freezing milk a few weeks ago. I always stock up when I can get $1.99 gallons at Dillons… I usually buy 6 gallons at a time. I’ve never heard of the salt tip! Thanks!

Ooh! Thanks for this! I will most certainly be asking at my favorite CVS store. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that one of my friends is the manager. hee hee

That salt tip is great! I so wish we had a CVS (for so many reasons:)
I hope you can sneak those beans in next week for your menu–they are such a great way to stretch the budget and get that extra protein and fiber:)

I just wanted to stop by and say thank you for visiting my blog.
Thank you for posting this tip on the half priced milk at CVS. I have five milk drinkers at my house and we go through at least 3 gallons of milk a week. This was an awesome tip, and I will be heading out to my CVS tomorrow to see if they have any 3 day old milk.
Take care!

My hubby asked at our local CVS (Roanoke, VA) about this and the gal told him that they don’t do it. He didn’t ask a manager though… I’m wondering if the employee was planning on buying the expiring milk herself. The next time I’m in I’m going to ask the manager, just in case. With all the milk drinkers in my house my wallet would be very happy with 1/2 price milk!

Hi! I just read your post and appreciate the info…I just wanted to asking about freezing milk…is it really drinkable/usable after defrosting?? Does it taste the exact same? I’ve just never heard of that.
Thanks!

Elizabeth-
Yes, the milk is really fine after freezing it. I’ve been doing it for years, and have never had a problem. It does take a while to fully defrost, usually about two days. But if you put it in the fridge overnight, by morning you will be able to pour some milk out (the rest will still need more thawing out time). I have never had any bad tasting milk after thawing, it’s always been fine. I’m not sure how long it will stay good frozen, but the way we drink milk around here, we’ve never had time for any to go bad! If you find a great deal on some milk, stock up and try it out. It really works! Thanks for your question!
