Recycling Craft: Crayon Muffins
August 31st, 2008 | By Kendra

This is an excellent way to re-use broken crayons. And they make great gifts for children too!
Crayon Muffins
- Muffin pan
- foil muffin liners (or regular liners, stacked three deep each)
- broken crayons
First remove all of the paper from each crayon.
Heat the oven to 350*.
Put liners in pan.
Fill each cup with broken crayons (only about half way full). All different colors is fun, but I think similar colors together looks prettier for a gift (like red+pink, yellow+orange, blue + green, etc.) This would also be a fun “sorting” activity for young children.
Place pan in oven and watch carefully.
When the crayons have melted together, remove from the oven.
You can use a toothpick to make a swirl effect in the wax before it cools. Just be careful, the wax is very HOT!
Let them cool. Remove the liners and voila! Beautiful new crayons!

That is a BRILLIANT idea for a gift, and it would look so pretty! I am definately going to have to try that out. I wonder if you could get shaped those tins from craft stores to bake them in instead, so you can have crayons in different shapes.
Thanks for the great idea!

Seesawstar-
Yeah, shaped tins would be a great idea. The only thing would be that you would probably have to only use them for crayons, since you couldn’t really protect them with liners. But they would be so cute in hearts or other shapes!

Those are so cool! They might be easier for a little one to hold on to.

To those of you who are thinking about using different shaped pans you may have a hard time getting them out but try putting them in the freezer for 30 mins after they have completely cooled it may help to pop them out, thats what I do with those scented wax burners things when I’m tired of one scent and want to change to a different one.. hope that helps!

I made these using mini muffin tins. I just lined each cup with aluminum foil, which I bet would work with the shaped cups (so you don’t ruin them for other baking)!
September 1st, 2008 at 7:48 pmI like the two-color, swirly idea! I just used a rainbow for mine.
