What? No more CVS!?

July 5, 2008

You guys have probably been wondering why we haven’t mentioned any recent CVS trips, or posted any weekly deals. Well, you might want to sit down for this… we’ve stopped CVSing. Now, don’t freak out, it may not be forever, we’re not sure yet. But for now, we’ve both decided to take a break from it. There are several reasons why we have decided this.

As fun as it was, it was becoming a huge time consuming task which was taking away from time with our families. It takes many hours researching the best deals, gathering and sorting all of the coupons, figuring out the best scenarios, posting all of this info, and then doing the actual shopping itself, sometimes at several different stores.

Also, with gas prices as high as they are, and the closest CVS being about 15 min. away, we started considering the cost in time and gas for these “free” things, and we’ve decided it just wasn’t really the most frugal thing anymore.

Thirdly, since we are on our quest to have less and living healthier, we’ve decided to start trying to make the things that we can ourselves (deo, toothpaste, soap, shampoo…) to save money and live “greener”.

So, hope you guys understand, and don’t hate us forever! We’d love to have you join us in this new frugal endeavor, so we will be posting “make it yourself” recipes for toiletries, cleaning supplies, and whatever else we can as we find and test them. Hopefully this will be just as helpful to your budgets, as well as a healthier option. Thanks for all of your support and encouragement!! We love you guys.

Creating A Keepsake Out Of Baby’s Old Clothes

July 2, 2008

I came across the cutest idea tonight on this blog! And I thought that this might go well with our new theme of minimizing and reusing/re-purposing things. If you have some old, outgrown clothes of baby’s that you just haven’t been able to let go, this may be a great solution for you:

Turn baby’s clothing into a keepsake quilt!

And if you don’t know how to sew, you can send your clothing to this company (for a pretty penny!) and they will turn them into a beautiful keepsake blanket. Here are some examples from their website of what they do:

I LOVE this idea!!! And it would make a great gift for somebody too!

Journey To Less

July 1, 2008

Like my sister said, we are both on our journey to having less. As I’ve been reading and learning, I’m coming to realize how wasteful and overindulging our society is! We simply have so much STUFF! And it’s like we aren’t happy; we just have to keep getting more. In poorer countries some people only have two pairs of clothing, and maybe one or two bowls to eat from. And here we are, closets overflowing, cabinets toppling over with an overabundance of unnecessary items that we think we just have to have. And before long we get tired of the “old” things (though they are perfectly functional), and head out to buy new again.

I recently read a quote from a top fashion designer which has really made me re-evaluate my own role as consumer. He said,

“It is my job to make women unhappy with what they have.”

You know, that’s exactly it! Marketers are scheming, devising every plan imaginable to make us feel like what we have is inadequate, so that we go out and buy whatever they are pedaling, filling their greedy pockets. And we have been such suckers! And it’s not just the fashion industry, this goes for our vehicles, homes, appliances, home decor, and everything purchasable. How much longer will we fall for their devices, and allow them to manipulate us into feeling unhappy with what God has blessed us with? How often are we perfectly content with what we have, and then we are ambushed with a new fad or design that we just have to have and suddenly what we already posses is not good enough?

I have to admit, I am such a sucker for this! Especially watching HGTV, and home design shows where they go and remodel, or redecorate these homes and make them just gorgeous. Though the day before I was perfectly proud of the way my home looked, suddenly I’m feeling very unstylish, and like I need to go out and buy a bunch of stuff to redecorate with. What’s up with that? I know what it is, and the Lord Jesus warned us about it, it’s being covetous. I’m reminded of this verse:

“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.” Luke 12:15

And so, I’ve decided to go through my home and get rid of all of the things that I don’t absolutely need. Boy, is it going to be hard! I’ve started going through my closet, and the kid’s closets, and getting rid of most of the things in there (that will be a whole other post). Next I plan on going through the cabinets and doing a thorough cleaning! Who needs 10 plates and 15 glasses for a family of 4? I know I don’t, and I’m tired of feeling like do. After the cabinets and kitchen drawers have been paired down, I’ll tackle the toys (yes again!), knick knacks (though I don’t really have that many to start with), books, toiletries, and garage items. It will take a while since most of my stuff is in storage (we’re in the process of moving). But these are my goals.

I’m also reconsidering some appliances that I’ve had on my wish list, including a bread machine. Do I really need one… I know I can do it by hand? What can I live without?

Maybe I can challenge you today to think more about your role as a brainwashed consumer, and to pray about being more content with what you have, and maybe even striving towards less. And as I journey on my road to less, I’ll be sure to share my thoughts and efforts!

On Becoming a Minimalist

June 30, 2008

Kendra and I have been doing a lot of talking/thinking about being minimalists - parring down on what we have and living on less.

We hope to randomly be able to post on this subject (I think both of us have plans on minimizing our closets soon! :)) every now and then. We’d also love to hear from you all if you have ideas on the subject or have any goals that you’ve decided to tackle in this area yourself.

If you are like us, and want to get rid of “stuff” and start living a more simple life, here are a few baby steps to consider:

1. Get rid of unnecessary stuff (sell it or give it away…don’t throw it away unless it’s truly trash)
Instead of having 10 pairs of shoes, try parring is down to 5…or even 3 or 2. If you haven’t used that kitchen gadget for at least three months, it’s probably not a necessary item to keep in your home. Just take a look at what you have and really analyze what you have/need and start shedding the “stuff”

2. Buy more “permanents”, less disposables

3. Buy quality, rather than “convenient” or “cheap”
Cheap things often break quickly…then you have to go out and buy a new one! Focus on buying quality (for a little more money) and holding on to it for the long haul, making repairs or mending it as it wears down. Use money that you are saving from buying less disposables, to buy permanent, quality items.

4. Resist “buying”
Resist the temptation to buy something simply because it’s on “sale” and you “may need it someday”. If you have the urge to buy something, consider writing it on a wish list , then revisiting the list in a month to see if you still actually “want” it. Often times, you don’t want it anymore.

5. Mend, repair, call the company
Instead of just throwing something away because it broke, be a good consumer and call the company. Challenge them to make quality products and to repair/replace your product (unless, of course, it has been put to good use and has lived a long, useful life). If you don’t know how to repair or mend something, look it up or have someone teach you how.

Lessons From Butterberry Farm: A few Herbal Remedies, and more

June 27, 2008

I finally was able to visit my friend Adelia this week! I’ve been so busy that I haven’t had time to make a trip to see her. So many times I’ve wished to send her an email, but it is impossible since she does not have a computer. When I had a not-so-busy day, I decided to go see her. I tried giving her a call, but was unable to reach her, so I hopped in the car with my daughter and off we drove. I didn’t know if she would be home, but she usually is, so I hoped we would catch her there. When we pulled up the house seemed lifeless; nobody was in sight. I got out of my van and went to the front door. I knocked. Nobody answered. I wasn’t sure if I should leave, or if maybe they were out at the barn. I didn’t want to be creeping around their house, but I thought they may be there, so I got Jada out of the car and we slowly walked behind the house toward the barn. I stopped and listened carefully, and was relieved when I heard voices coming from the barn. I yelled, “Hello!” in my friendliest, non-intrusive voice. I yelled one more time. Then the two girls came running out of the barn happily to see us, and the youngest yelled, “Jada!!” and ran to hug her. They giggled and ran off to play. I asked the smiling, oldest girl if her mom was in the barn. She said, “Yeah! We were just looking at the new kittens.” I walked with her to see the babies, and found Adelia. I sheepishly said, “I hope you don’t mind me just stopping by! I tried to call but couldn’t get you.” She was so kind, and talkative. She seemed fine with me just coming out of the blue.

The girls climbed up to the loft in the barn to watch as the new kittens nursed on their mother. There was also a new calf wandering after it’s mother in the pasture. A lot has been going on! We made small talk about the animals, and what’s been going on since we last spoke. After a while we wandered inside and sat on the couch for a wonderful conversation. They always impress me with their kindness and hospitality. I feel like I just invite myself over all the time, but they make me feel welcome and at home.

Somehow we got on the subject of herbs and herbal remedies. Oh, I know, I told her that I had Pink Eye last week, and how my doc. bill was $87! She said smiling, “You know, there’s an herb for that.” She told me that Eye Bright is used to treat Pink Eye, along with Allergies (and probably some other things as well). Then she told me a story of how her husband once got Shingles on, in and around his eye. It was a really severe case and the doctor warned him that if he didn’t get it treated he would go blind. Well, when he went to pick up the prescription he was astounded to find that even after insurance the cost for the med’s would be more than a house payment! He called Adelia and told her to break out her herbal books. She did, and by that night she had come up with a solution. She found that Chickweed is a great cure for Shingles. She made eye drops, a tea to drink, and a salve mixture using Vaseline to spread all over his eye. By the next morning she says it looked a whole lot better; and soon it was gone. Wow! I told her that I was calling her the next time my family had an ailment!

The discussion of herbal remedies prompted her to go and retrieve her newest gadget. She brought out this little thing called a “Cap-M-Quick”. It is used for making your own pills, out of whatever herb or vitamin you want! You just make your powder, fill these capsules, and there you go. Home made meds. She had bartered with her herb shop owner friend, and traded some bales of hay for this neat little device. I didn’t even know that they made such a thing. She hasn’t tried it yet though. She said it will be good to use with the herbs that don’t taste so nice going down.

She also told me during our discussion, that Flax Seed is very good brain food. She has a friend who has three autistic boys, and said that the flax seed really improves their behavior. She just mixes it into their chocolate milk, and they never know it’s there. (By the way, to get a free sample of flax seed call 1-800-333-5813, they are really friendly). I think I’ll give it a try.

I started telling her about my quest to become less of a consumer, and start trying to make more of my own things. She suddenly said, “Oh! Did I give you that book “Henry”?” I told her no. She jumped up and went to her room for a minute, and came back with a little paperback book in her hand. It was called, Henry and The Great Society. I couldn’t wait to get home and read it! She wouldn’t really tell me what it was about.

We talked a while longer about family and living on less. She mentioned a big family reunion that they have coming up. I told her how I just got back from California and my own family reunion. I talked about how I hadn’t seen just about all of them in over 10 years; cousins, aunts and uncles. She said that her family gets together every year for a reunion. There are many of them, by the sounds of it, and they all camp out and visit with each other for about three days. It sounds like a wonderful time of fun and fellowship. I told her how sad I think it is that so many family’s are like part of mine, and don’t see each other very often at all. I love that my family here, my dad’s side, is very close. We always get together for birthdays, and major holidays. I’m glad that my kids see and experience that.

She said that her small living room floor is usually full of sleeping people during these reunions, and her yard is open for tents to be pitched. I marveled at her hospitality. I told her that I feel like I can’t entertain because I have such a small home, but I realize that that shouldn’t keep me from opening my home up to others. I shared with her a recent account I’ve read of a family in a third world country who really has nothing, and a tiny shack of a home, yet they are so happy to invite guests into their humble home for a meal. Though they only have two bowls, nobody seemed to mind waiting until a bowl was washed for their turn to eat. Why can’t we be more like that?

Anyways, I had to leave before I wanted to (as always), so I gathered Jada up and headed back out to the van. They all walked us out and the girls said their goodbye’s. It was so good to hang out with them again. Adelia told me as I was leaving that she would like to take me to her herb shop friend to introduce me sometime. I told her I’d love that. I’m almost done reading the book that she let me borrow. I’ll have to write a review about it for you guys to check out. It’s really thought provoking!

Until next time,

Home made Deodorant

June 25, 2008

In my latest quest to become less of a consumer, I’ve been searching for a good home made recipe for making deodorant. I think I’ve found a good one to try. Here it is:

Mix:

1 Tbsp. Corn Starch

1 Tbsp. Baking Soda

1 Tbsp. Extra Virgin Olive Oil

5-6 drops Tea Tree Oil

5-6 drops Lavender Oil

This mixture makes a paste that you rub into your skin with your fingers. Check out a great demo of this recipe HERE. I’ll have to let you know what I think about it once I try it!

Have any of you tried making your own deo? Does anyone have a recipe to share? I’d love to hear your comments!

Hang Drying On A Short Line

June 24, 2008

You don’t have to have a long clothes line to be able to hang dry a lot of clothes. Here’s a lesson from the Chinese: to conserve space, they hang shirts, blouses, and dresses on clothes hangers before putting them on the line. They also clip socks and washcloths to the lower edge of other things.

What a NEAT Freebie!

June 18, 2008
hippopost.gif

Ok, there is neat…and then there is NEAT!!!

Keren , over at Mill Musings (you should check her blog out - it’s great!) posted a NEAT freebie - free postcards PLUS free postage with Hippopost! Here’s what she says:

“…I recently discovered Hippopost , which allows you to upload a picture of your choice to be used as a postcard (you can also add a message). Hippopost will then print the postcard and the postage is covered by advertising (mailed to the US and Canada only–I’m guessing you could send them if you are located internationally, but would have to send them to a US or Canadian address).

They are able to do this for free by placing a small advertisement on the postcard. So long as you don’t mind sending a postcard that has an advertisement on it, this is a great freebie! I just ordered a postcard, so I’ll update once we receive it. If you’re on a trip and want to send a postcard–all you need is an internet connection and a digital photo (you can actually select one of their images and just add your message, too)!”

What a great tip! And what a neat business idea!

Our Marriage Purpose Statement

June 17, 2008

A few months before my husband and I were married, we wrote a purpose statement for our marriage hoping to be able to look at our beliefs as a couple and determine some goals that would serve as a guide for the way we wanted live our lives and raise our family. It was a very good exercise for us and actually took almost a week to write in between our conversations, writing down our thoughts, reading Scripture, praying and deciding exactly how we wanted to word it.

This is what is says:

By God’s grace we will seek in our marriage to exemplify the relationship between Christ and His church by exhibiting a self-sacrificing devotion to Christ and by making the Word of God our uncompromising foundation and guide to all our lives affairs; by practicing selfless love, enjoyable companionship, and spiritual concern and accountability toward each other; by creating a Christ-honoring atmosphere in our home; by raising children who love and fear the Lord; by working as a team to be a light to the lost and to edify the body of believers for the glory of God.

We had it printed in our wedding program and asked that people pray that we would be true to our statement. It now sits framed in our bedroom on our dresser and we often look it over to re-analyze where we are and where we should be.

You may have something like a purpose statement for your marriage or family, but if you don’t (and want to), start by sitting down and writing out the following:

  1. What is our purpose (as a couple? as a family?)?
  2. How can we carry that purpose out?

Then put some flesh on those bones and fill in your statement with the "how to’s". It’s a very fun excercise and a great way to get your family involved, and when you are finished, you can frame it and put it on your wall!

How Deep The Father’s Love For Us

June 14, 2008

With Father’s Day coming up tomorrow, I thought it would be appropriate to post a song that heralds our Heavenly Father’s love for us.

How Deep The Father’s Love For Us

By Stuart Townend

How deep the Father’s love for us,
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss,
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the chosen One,
Bring many sons to glory

Behold the Man upon a cross,
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice,
Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom
